In 1976, his dream became a reality when he was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as an amateur free agent. After four years in the Phillies’ minor league system, Hernandez was traded to the Chicago Cubs in 1980.

It was with the Cubs that Hernandez found his first taste of success in the big leagues, becoming a reliable reliever in their bullpen. But it wasn’t until he was traded to the Detroit Tigers in 1984 that he truly blossomed into a superstar. In his first season with the Tigers, hernandez recorded 32 saves and a 1.92
